Hypnosis is a natural holistic therapy. Hypnosis may have begun life
in the Greek and Egyptian ‘sleep temples’ which were used for healing.
Ancient Druidism called it ‘sleep magic’ but there is no real magic
involved. It is state of awareness that can be brought out by repetitive
drumming or chanting as used in other cultures for ritualistic healing
ceremonies. During sleep we enter stages of hypnotism quite naturally
and these can be used for our own purposes such as confidence building
or problem solving.
Hypnosis has a clear and obvious difference from
Hypnotherapy. The main difference is that Hypnosis is a natural state of
mind whereas Hypnotherapy is the work done whilst in a Hypnotic state.
There is no magic formula or feeling to the hypnotic state, as it is a
level of relaxation and calmness that does nothing more relieve stress
for a period. There is something that can happen when in hypnosis, it is
therapy and this is where the Hypnosis and the Therapy come together
into Hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a tool, a vehicle that can be used to
provide a therapy for the client. Hypnosis never did anything for anyone
except offer relaxation.
A Hypnotherapist will use their skill to help take someone into
hypnosis to facilitate a therapy session and the therapist controls this
session after consultation with the client to achieve goals agreed by
both parties. This is Hypnotherapy, a managed state of Hypnosis for a
therapeutic outcome utilising the goals of the client and the
Hypnotherapist for a successful and beneficial outcome.
A Hypnotherapist should be using hypnosis as a tool to facilitate the
solution finding processes and therapies that bring benefit to the
client.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Most people, of a higher level of intellect, with good visualisation
able to use their imagination to 'feel' and sense within the mind can be
hypnotised but only if they want to. The client is in total control,
even when in this natural altered state. It is a common mistake that
people assume their mind will be “taken over”. This is not true.
Therapeutic hypnosis is used to assist the client to make changes in
their lives by use of their subconscious mind and should never be
confused with stage hypnosis, which is for entertainment value only. A
client would never do anything that would be contrary to their nature.

Hypnosis is an excellent way of dealing with stress and its negative
effects. By learning to use self-hypnosis and practising it on a regular
basis, stress levels are kept low and can be managed easily before they
build up to dangerous levels that could damage health. As part of a
treatment the therapist can easily teach self-hypnosis for the client to
practice at home.
